Jul. 3rd, 2006 08:27 pmThe non-magical library had provided a most helpful reference book.
Havelock had read it from cover to cover (occasionally taking notes) while the child slept, and come to the conclusion that while he was unfamiliar with the procedure, he could handle it for a day or two. Obviously its guardian had been less than competent, or at least lacking in confidence.
When Gabriel wakes and sets up a rather worried-sounding wail, Havelock calmly puts down the neatly handwritten pages and rolls up his sleeves.
Half an hour later, an extremely efficiently washed, changed and fed baby sits propped up and ensconced by neatly arranged pillows, watching the assassin with contented incomprehension as he reads out loud – for the child’s benefit, it is good for a developing mind - from a slender booklet. The little boy sucks his fingers attentively through the instrumental prelude to the famous Opera Lohenshaak, and agrees occasionally with the opinions expressed in Fondel's Prelude in G Major through waving of hands and quiet babbling.
“Indeed,” says Havelock gravely.
